COVID causes Canada West, U Sports cancellations

COVID-19 has necessitated the cancellation of several winter sports by Canada West, a decision that will have ramifications for the University of Regina’s athletic program.

It was announced Thursday that there will not be any regular-season, playoff or championship events in the conference, which has a membership of 17 schools.

The cancellations affect the U of R Cougars’ basketball, volleyball and hockey teams. A decision has yet to be made on sports such as curling, track and field, and swimming, in which the U of R also competes.

Without the conventional model, an alternative would be to hold non-conference games “based on the principle of regional cohort play,” a media release said in part.

Earlier, Canada West had decided not to proceed with its fall sports, which affected the U of R in terms of football, soccer and cross-country.

The goal is to fully resume Canada West play in the fall of 2021.

Also on Thursday, U Sports — the governing body for university sports in Canada — announced that it will not hold any of its national championships in winter sports in 2021.
