A man in China has been jailed for more than three years after brutally beating a bus driver who had asked him to wear a face mask.

The angry commuter hit the transport worker’s head at least 16 times after being reminded to use the protective covering on board, according to state media.

The culprit was allegedly acting under the influence of alcohol when he refused to follow the mandatory rule aimed at preventing the spread of coronavirus.

The incident took place in the city of Guangzhou in southern China on April 21.

According to state-run Guangzhou Daily, the attacker, known by his surname Li, had drunk several bottles of beer before boarding the bus at around 10am in the district of Conghua.

He allegedly refused to wear his face mask properly and the bus driver, known as Mr Wang, had to urge him to follow the rule repeatedly.

Mr Li was enraged by Mr Wang’s act and started to assault him verbally and physically.

Surveillance footage shows the unruly bus rider, who was wearing a face mask under his chin, approaching the transport worker. He then started to punch the victim, who was still steering the vehicle.

After Mr Wang stopped the bus to call the police, Mr Li carried on striking him before walking to the middle of the bus to try to smash open the windows.

Mr Wang sustained minor injuries in the incident, the report said.

The perpetrator stood trial at the Conghua District Court yesterday, the court said in a social media post.

He was found guilty of endangering public security by dangerous means and sentenced to three years and three months in prison.
